New character alert! Her name is Kaffé and she LOVES coffee. She’s one of many characters who are loosely inspired by people who are near and dear to my heart. Over time, I hope I’m able to introduce all the characters I have planned.
Also, I’d like to think that Santos is sketching out his own cartoon strip called Ninja Rabbit and Carrot Boy. His ‘Mary Sue’ story of sorts where he dreams of himself of being a fearless warrior rabbit accompanied by the not-too-bright-sidekick, Carrot-Boy. (Another idea i’d like to expand on in future posts.)
Before we follow Santos out into the city, let’s take a break! This intermission is brought to you by warm, fuzzy love. So how was your Valentine’s weekend?
I know.. it’s a little late. But, oh well, I only post on Mondays. So see you next Monday!
He wasn’t even looking at the paper..
Santos wraps up his long note to an unsuspecting and sleepy Dee, before he heads out into the city. He’s pretty impatient, and resents being cooped up in an apartment, when there’s so many things to do in NYC. So ends this short three parter, kind of thingy.
With things getting busy in my neck, I hope to keep posting these up. Once a week, at the very least! See you again soon.
I have a confession to make.
After much second guessing myself, I changed what was written on Santos’ letter, right at the last minute before posting. For better or for worse, its there.(I sort of opted for a Darth Vader reference. After all, if Santos was living in a galaxy far, far away, he wouldn’t be any other person but Darth Vader. Imagine that.)
Y’know,.. Santos thinks he’s a lot smarter than he really is. He also thinks writing with his left hand will make him look like a genius. There’s also a hidden gag that will play out later in the strip’s continuation. You might’ve noticed already.
I just want to mention that the person that Dee is loosely based off of is, quite the contrary, an awesome rabbitsitter, btw.
It’s been awhile, hasn’t it?
Though, I never really stopped drawing BGR. I think I selfishly became my own best audience, sketching different characters on whatever paper that is handy. And no one gets to see them, unless you’re close to me. Even then, its almost like not sharing my favorite toys. But its time to post them up like toys in a display case. Who looks at them, anyways?? The interwebs is a weird thing.
So I guess I’ll pick up right where I left off, with Machu dropping off Santos at Dee’s doorstep. Dee, who by the way, is loosely based off my good friend, and sometimes Santos’ rabbitsitter, Dana Wulfekotte from Lead Paint Comics. Here’s her tumblr page. She caught the bunny bug, and got two of her own.
As this strip shows, when it really comes down to it, Santos does care deeply about M’chu. Although, in the past, he’s usually he’s very reluctant about showing it. Just like in real life.
Anyways, I’ll be here again next week. It’ll be a little happier next time.
This is turning out to be one long goodbye. Santos doesn’t seem to care. He’s in his zen mode, going for that all time high stabbery record. Stabbing+ Robbery = Stabbery. (For the record, we do not condone either. It usually leads to trouble. Trust me.)
By the way, -if you can make it out, the mug who’s framed in the picture is Dee’s BF, ‘Bill’.
A new character graces our comic today. Her name is Dee, and she is loosely based on our good friend Dana Wulfekotte from Leadpaintcomics.com. Nothing can convey how appreciative we are for Dana and her boyfriend (Yes, our good friend, too) Phil Andrews from Elmsfieldcomics.com for taking care of Santos in time of great need. Matter of fact, to prove that Santos is real, and Dana took care of him, here is a sketch she did. Thanks again, guys!
I’m surrounded by the best-est friends! Friday the 15th, Keith Vincent drew me this picture of Santos for my birthday! How cool is that? I’ll tell you: Sooo cool! Thanks so much Keith!
I also want to thank John Holt , Mary Varn (from NPC Comic) for hosting an awesome birthday-get-together! And Phil, Dana Wulfekotte (from Lead Paint Comics), Brian, Jules & Zoya for showing up! I can’t be more thankful enough, guys! You know how to make a fella feel special. -Matt
Santos and I are between apartments, so we’re basically homeless for the next couple of weeks. We’ll try to update on our regular schedule, but things are going to be tough going for awhile until we land on our feet. (THUMP!) -Matt
It’s the first Thursday of the month, so its time for another BGR Cosplay Thursday.
To get into the Tron video release mood, I had to draw me some ‘Trontos’. Geez, the last time I drew anything Tron, I think I was 7 years old. Might even still have that picture somewhere.
Anyways, Tron is my favorite, blah blah blah, Tron videogames blah, blah, blah …. I guess I might be the minority when I say I actually liked Tron Legacy. But also I’m happy to hear that they’re also releasing the original Tron film on Blu-Ray along with this release. Well I hope you enjoy the pic. -Matt
I guess I have some explaining to do.
Firstly, I want to introduce ‘Toby’. He’s (loosely) based on one of my partners in crime – the talented Brendan Tobin. They usually have to separate us, like 2 grade school children (-as they did where we worked, really!). When we’re not getting fired from work, throwing bricks at taxi cabs, or daring each other to run into the freeway, (again, all true!) we’re usually throwing stupid sketches at each other. I didn’t say great, I said stupid. Well, mine are. Brendan’s sketches always amaze me. Well, yesterday was his birthday. So Happy Birthday, good buddy! I still owe you a movie night to see Brokeback Mountain. I have no idea what it’s about, but they said its good if you’re into cowboys. Whaddaya say, pardner?
The other thing,.. is for all those people who said I look like a beluga whale. They’re right. I do look like a beluga whale (google it!). They have a big forehead, and they’re cute. Nowadays, my forehead is growing bigger and bigger, and I hope I still have some cute left in me. Anyways, I came to terms with having a forehead like a whale.
P.S. Thanks Jenni for putting up with me via Skype these late nights. -Matt
Originally I was going to post an elaborate story with multiple parts as our April Fools entry. But sometimes the simplest solution is the best solution. So for the meantime I shelved it, and in its place I have the one you see here. Perhaps I’ll post it next week …or perhaps not. April Fools! -Matt
UPDATE: I just updated the pic. It now has a depressing grey void.
I asked my old friend and co-worker Keith for a suggestion on today’s post. Since its been raining and hailing outside, he recommended putting Santos in this crappy weather. Thanks, Keith, old pal. I used Jenni’s post from the old site for inspiration. You can’t beat those scribbles. -Matt
What is it with animals and toilet paper? Santos gets a visit from Dokebi, and gremlin/goblin type creature who gives Santos crappy ideas. Not exactly a leprechaun, but Happy St. Patty’s day, anyways. Hey, at least Machu has a green shirt on! Be safe -Matt
This was kind of how it went. I forgot what movie we were about to watch, but we definitely had to get good seats for it.
Apparently, on the third panel, it looks like CoCo turns into Darth Vader when she gets mad. -Matt
Although we started last month, for every first Thursday of each month we’re going to attempt to post up ‘Cosplay Thursdays’. We’ll be dressing up Machu, Coco, or Santos as our favorite popular character(s) from different genres. This month is MODOK to coincide with March MODOK Madness happening RIGHT NOW at www.marchmodokmadness.blogspot.com
My close buddies, Brendan Tobin and Pedro Delgado spearheaded the project 3 years ago, and its grown ever since. And if you’re wondering who MODOK is, he is an under appreciated MARVEL villain from the late 60′s. MODOK is an acronym for Mental Organism Design Only for Killing…. or in this case KUDDLING! -Matt
Happy President’s Day! I hope you’re relaxing and enjoying your Monday off – for those of you have have it. This comic was hastily made, …so I hope its somewhat informative. Other than honoring our forefathers, I just wanted to see how Santos looked in a Washington wig on. -Matt
Sometimes I’m lucky enough to work with super talented people in the industry. Such the case with husband and wife dynamo Ryan Green and Fawn (v-v-eera-sumthin’…) Veerasunthorn!
Thanks again guys, for posting a certain “Disapproving Rabbit” on Cuter in Bunny Ears. Ryan/Fawn, keep up the awesome-ist work. -Matt
My buddy, Brad, is coming to visit me sometime in March as a Christmas gift from his wife. She thought it would be nice if i gifted a BGR comic strip to mark this momentous occasion. I put a little twist on things. Thought I’d share! -Matt
Disclaimer: He’s rarely a mad person.
